The Business Cost of Tyre Downtime
April 26, 2026Thermal behaviour is one of the most important indicators in understanding tyre performance and operating stress. As part of PPP-related evaluation work, thermal testing has been used to better understand how heat develops across the tyre under controlled conditions and how those observations may contribute to broader thinking around tyre resilience, stability, and operating performance.
Why thermal testing matters
Tyres operate under constant mechanical stress. Heat build-up is influenced by load, speed, surface conditions, inflation, driving style, and the internal condition of the tyre itself. When heat is poorly distributed or rises excessively, it can contribute to faster degradation, reduced efficiency, and increased operating risk.
Thermal analysis helps reveal:
- where heat is concentrating within the tyre footprint and structure,
- whether heat is building evenly or unevenly,
- how operational conditions may affect tyre stress over time, and
- how controlled comparisons can support better understanding of performance behaviour.
What PPP is interested in
PPP testing is not only about a puncture event. It is also about understanding the broader operating environment of the tyre. This includes thermal behaviour, pressure consistency, structural resilience, and the practical realities of how tyres perform in demanding conditions.
Controlled thermal work forms part of this broader effort to build practical, evidence-based understanding rather than relying on assumptions alone.
From observation to practical value
Thermal testing has value for multiple stakeholders. For vehicle owners, it helps illustrate why heat matters. For fleet operators, it helps frame the connection between tyre condition, downtime risk, and operating efficiency. For technical audiences, it adds another layer of insight into real-world tyre behaviour.
As the PPP Insights Hub grows, further testing observations, summaries, and supporting material will be added here in a practical and accessible format.
